Back in May 2023, we were proud to sponsor the development of a new great crested newt mitigation pond at Abberton Reservoir Nature Discovery Park. Our £1,000 investment ensured that Essex Wildlife Trust and its partners could get the project off the ground, and we’re delighted to share how far things have come.
What began as a freshly dug muddy basin has transformed into a thriving pond filled with naturally established vegetation. The work, part of a joint initiative between Essex & Suffolk Water, The Blue Spaces Project and Essex Wildlife Trust, has already begun attracting an array of wildlife.
During this year’s newt surveys, two great crested newts were spotted by torchlight, while smooth newts are now a regular sight in the water. Although no great crested newts were caught in bottle traps this season, there’s every indication that the habitat is well on its way to supporting a breeding population. Further surveys will take place in 2026, including checks for eggs as the vegetation continues to develop.
It’s a privilege to see our support helping to enhance biodiversity and access at one of Essex’s most important nature reserves.
